Personal Development

At Fountaindale, personal development is about helping every young person to become the best version of themselves.

We want our pupils to develop the knowledge, skills, confidence and experiences they need to live happy, healthy and fulfilling lives. For our learners, personal development looks different for everyone. It may be developing the confidence to make a choice, learning to communicate with others, travelling in the community, preparing a meal, taking part in a sports activity, developing friendships or preparing for life after Fountaindale.

Our personal development offer is woven throughout school life. It is not something that happens only in a lesson - every experience is an opportunity to learn, grow and develop.

Our BEE Ethos - Belong, Engage, Enjoy - is at the heart of personal development at Fountaindale.

We want every pupil to:

Belong - feel valued, included and respected as a member of our school and wider community.

Engage - develop communication, independence, confidence and the skills to participate in learning and life.

Enjoy - experience success, have fun, discover new interests and develop positive relationships with others.

Developing the Whole Person

Personal development at Fountaindale encompasses a wide range of experiences and opportunities, including:

Health and Wellbeing

We support pupils to understand and look after their physical and emotional wellbeing. This includes opportunities to develop healthy lifestyles, explore emotions, build resilience and understand how to keep themselves safe.

Communication and Relationships

Communication is central to everything we do. Pupils are supported to express their preferences, make choices, share their views and develop positive relationships with others using the communication methods that work best for them.

Community and Citizenship

We provide opportunities for pupils to experience and contribute to the wider community. This includes learning about the world around us, developing an understanding of rights and responsibilities and taking part in meaningful community experiences.

Independence

We want every pupil to become as independent as possible. This might include developing personal care skills, preparing food, managing money, making choices, travelling, completing everyday tasks or taking increasing responsibility for themselves.

Creativity, Culture and Experiences

Pupils have opportunities to experience music, art, performance, celebrations, different cultures and a wide range of creative activities. These experiences help pupils discover their interests, develop confidence and understand the diverse world around them.

Physical Development and Active Lifestyles

Being active, trying new activities and developing physical confidence are important parts of life at Fountaindale. Pupils have opportunities to take part in sports, swimming, outdoor learning and other physical activities.

Rights and Respect

As a Gold: Rights Respecting School, children's rights are embedded throughout school life. Pupils learn that they have rights, that their voices matter and that they have a responsibility to respect the rights of others.

Learning Beyond the Classroom

Some of the most powerful personal development experiences happen outside the classroom.

Throughout the year, pupils take part in a wide range of experiences and events designed to broaden their horizons, develop confidence and create memorable opportunities.

These include:

  • Creative Arts Week – opportunities to explore music, art, creativity and performance.
  • Sports Days and sporting events – developing teamwork, participation, resilience and enjoyment of physical activity.
  • Forest School and outdoor learning – developing independence, confidence and an appreciation of nature.
  • Swimming and physical activity – developing physical skills, confidence and water awareness.
  • Music and creative opportunities – discovering new interests and expressing ourselves.
  • School celebrations and special events – coming together as a community and celebrating individual and collective achievements.
  • Community visits and trips – developing confidence and independence in real-world environments.
  • Rights Respecting activities – understanding children's rights, equality, respect and the importance of everyone's voice.
  • Social opportunities and clubs – developing friendships, communication and relationships.
  • BEE Amazing experiences – celebrating individual achievements and encouraging pupils to take on new challenges.
